Though blessed with a fearsome pair of tusks, placerias' main form of defence was sheer weight of numbers; the tusks were primarily used as digging tools. In a herd of 40 beasts, several could be picked off by a stalking Postosuchus and hardly missed. However, the very young and very old would have been fodder for all manner of creatures should they have fallen behind the herd, ranging from the wily cynodonts to the cunning Coelophysis.
